Physical and device-based therapy in Hamburg

What this is

Physical and device-based methods are a targeted complement to our therapy. They include therapeutic ultrasound, electrotherapy, and cold and heat applications, matched to the findings, the tissue and the stage of treatment.

Therapeutic ultrasound on the knee

Where it is used

Acute pain and swelling after injury
Tendon irritation and insertion complaints
Muscle tension
Pain relief in the early rehab phase
Muscle activation after surgery
Recovery after intense load
Chronic pain, alongside active therapy
Preparing the tissue before treatment

The methods

Therapeutic ultrasound transmits mechanical vibrations into the tissue and is used above all for tendon and soft-tissue complaints.

Electrotherapy uses targeted currents, either to relieve pain or, as electrical stimulation, to activate muscles that are hard to switch on after injury or surgery.

Cold helps with pain and swelling in the acute phase. Heat prepares the tissue and releases tension. Which method fits depends on the findings, the tissue and the stage of healing.

A complement, not a substitute

We never use device-based methods as a single application without an examination, always within a treatment plan.

They can ease pain and make it easier to start active therapy, but they do not replace rebuilding. In the long run, load management, manual treatment and training are what count.

So we will also tell you honestly when a device would add little in your case.

Questions about this service

Frequently asked

Can I book these methods individually?

We use device-based methods as a matter of principle within a treatment plan, not as a single application without an examination. They are often part of a regular appointment, alongside manual treatment and training.

Cold or heat: which is right?

As a rule of thumb: cold for fresh injuries and acute swelling, heat for tension and longer-standing complaints. In each case we decide according to the findings and the stage of healing, and tell you what you can use at home.

Can you feel ultrasound or electrotherapy?

Ultrasound is usually barely noticeable, sometimes with a slight warmth. With electrotherapy you feel a tingling or, with muscle stimulation, a distinct tightening of the muscle. We set the intensity so that it is comfortable.

Are there reasons not to use it?

Yes, among others pacemakers and other electronic implants, metal implants in the treatment area, pregnancy, acute infection or inflammation, and cancer. For cold and heat, circulation and sensory disorders also count. We ask about these before the first application.
